CALA NY Official Press Release, May 3, 2011: Please take a minute to make a difference! Call Ohel’s answering service after hours at 1-800-603-OHEL or during business hours at 718-851-6300 and leave a message for Esther Katz to take care of Andrea and her four children instead of abusing them and throwing them out of the Domestic Violence shelter.
Andrea is very special frum (Orthodox Jewish) woman who is disabled and is a cancer survivor, a domestic violence victim and the mother of 4 yeshiva boys with special needs – one in a school for autistic children. She can hardly walk with her cane because of terrible back pains and she now has a fever of 104 with pneumonia. Andrea’s boys are 11, 9, 8, and 7 years old. Andrea is a licensed podiatrist in the state of Florida, and came to NY for treatment of her cancer.
Esther Katz is the head of the Domestic Violence Unit at Ohel Children’s Home and Family Service. They ‘claim’ they need the space and that she was there too long. We know that they simply want to get a new client into the shelter for the kickbacks. Now that both Section 8 and WorkAdvantage have been stopped there is no rental assistance at all in New York. A two bedroom apartment in New York starts at $1,500 a month in rent.
Andrea has been threatened by Esther Katz that if she is not out by May 5, 2011, she will be forcibly removed with Police – see letter. Andrea begged for an extension because she now needs to be treated again for pneumonia and needs a bit more time. Esther Katz’s response was that if you are not out by May 5, we will call ACS-CPS and tell them that “if you are so sick and there are no other options, then you should be hospitalized and put the children into foster care”. And also, the empty promise continued, that when Andrea finds an apartment, she will ‘get the kids back’.
Ohel is not only going to make kickback money on ‘rehabilitating a d.v. client into the community’ but also huge monies on the foster care.
Approximately one month ago, Andrea fell three times when she was forced to move her stuff around to accommodate a new roommate. At this point, Andrea was treated at Maimonidies Hospital for serious injuries related to the schlepping, while Ohel refused to assist with watching the children while Andrea was languishing in the hospital for nearly 12 hours. During that time, Esther Katz let herself into the residence, and left a note and said she “moved the stuff around” and that Andrea must move everything by Monday – see note. At that time, they had suggested Andrea to take a basement apartment, despite her current use of a wheelchair due to injuries sustained from moving her stuff into one tiny room.
Esther went through all her stuff and commented about her protein shakes, asking, “what are you doing with this junk”. She said, “I know everything that goes on in the apartment” and “I look under the beds, behind the stove, I know everything that’s going on”.
Andrea’s civil rights have been violated on so many levels. The unspeakable continues to happen each day at Ohel, an agency supposedly assisting Jewish families in NY with Social Services. Instead, they hurt our families, they hurt our children, and they are hurting our community. Help stop the massacre of our rights, and demand change!
